Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Natural Area Reserves Program, located in Kamuela, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,509-$4204/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Participates in a variety of activities associated with the Natural Area Reserves System (NARS) and the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW).  Performs various resource management, ecosystem restoration, and monitoring activities around the Island of Hawai‘i.  Monitors and controls non-native plants and feral ungulates in NARS. Establishes and monitors transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant distribution, including rare and endangered species.  Collects and analyzes technical field data.  Regularly coordinates the activities of volunteers in alien plant control, feral animal control, and other resource management work. Loads, unloads, aims, and fires handguns, shotguns, rifles and other RCUH-authorized firearms from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs. Expected to live in primitive camps in remote locations on a regular basis. Work is primarily located on the island of Hawai‘i, but may occasionally take place on other islands.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of field experience working in natural resource management or closely related field. (At least one (1) year of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university in a related discipline (i.e., Biology, Zoology, or related Natural Science) may substitute for experience).  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species.  Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology.  Working knowledge of safe use of firearms.  Ability to use map and compass to navigate in dense forests.  Ability to use Global Positioning System (GPS) units to document rare element locations and remote monitoring plots and transects.  Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection.  Ability to lead volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection.  Ability to safely apply herbicides.  Ability to construct, maintain, and repair ungulate exclusion fences.  Ability to hunt feral animals using firearms, traps, and dogs. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate prior to use of firearms on the job (whichever comes first) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass state and federal criminal history/record background check at initial hire, at change of job requiring use of firearms and annually, which legally enables possession and use of firearms and ammunition throughout duration of employment. Must obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service firearms training (or other comparable training) and State of Hawai‘i/DLNR Hunter Education Training Program firearms certification. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by state and federal laws. Failure to pass the firearms qualification requirements may be grounds for disqualification of part or all of the job duties. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete external sling load training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds assisted.  Ability to camp in remote areas for four to five (4-5) days a week. Ability to work at high altitudes, in cold and rainy or hot and dry conditions. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and non-native plants.  Experience in hunting feral animals.  Experience using radio telemetry, GPS, and Geographic Information System (GIS). Knowledge of endangered species in Hawai‘i.
