Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Maintains greenhouse plantings including watering, fertilizing, pest and weed control, repotting, accurate labeling, mixing planting media, maintenance of good light levels for various plants, and maintains greenhouse inventory.
  2. Assists collections managers with maintaining and updating data on plant collections at Lyon Arboretum, records accession numbers, source, status, planting location, verification, endangerment, etc. using computer-based programs.
  3. Performs plant propagation of tropical plants using a variety of methods such as use of seeds, cuttings, air layering, grafting, rhizome or corm division, etc.
  4. Assists grounds and greenhouse managers with locating and mapping living collections throughout the Arboretum.
  5. Informs staff about accession data and propagation procedures.
  6. Provides horticultural and botanical information and plant identification to University students and faculty, businesses, government, and the public.
  7. Gives advice to the public on choice and care of plants.
  8. Assists managers in the selection of plants and determination of sites for outplanting, while considering the horticultural requirements of the plants, theme of the area, aesthetics, and other factors.
  9. Participates in Arboretum events such as open houses, dedications, memorial services, and plant sales, which include periodic weekend activities and events.
  10. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in horticulture, botany, natural resource management or related fields and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for horticulture or greenhouse management; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in horticulture and greenhouse management; demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with pesticides and hazardous materials.
  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the plant propagation, plant nursery or greenhouse work.
  5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  9. Experience must include training or work experience with greenhouse or nursery work, plant propagation, pest control and use of appropriate tools, such as clippers, grafting knives, misting devices and irrigation equipment.
  10. Basic knowledge of, and experience in, plant identification.
  11. Must be able to lift and carry weights of 50 lbs.
  12. Must be able to use computers for word processing and database management
  13. Must be able to work in uneven terrain in inclement conditions.
  14. Valid driver’s license.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Working knowledge of tropical plants and taxonomy, including native Hawaiian plants
  2. Experience working in botanical garden or commercial plant nurseries.
  3. Knowledge and experience using database software for collections management.
  4. Knowledge of conservation issues in Hawaii.
