HAWAI‘I INVERTEBRATE PROGRAM TECHNICIAN – ID#18183. 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located in Kahului, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $2,571 - $3,750/Mon.

DUTIES: Assists the Hawai‘i Invertebrate Program (HIP) and Snail Extinction Prevention (SEP) Program with all aspects of rare invertebrate conservation. Queries literature and interviews resource managers to identify historical rare invertebrate localities. Participates in field surveys for rare invertebrate species and collects data to document presence, absence and abundance. Regularly monitors target rare invertebrate populations. Collects, enters, and analyzes field data. Installs and regularly monitors rat trapping grids around invertebrate populations. Constructs, maintains and monitors fencing and predator-proof exclosure structures. Assists with invertebrate captive rearing efforts. Participates in other management activities including but not limited to, weed removal, fencing, out-planting, chameleon control and predatory snail control.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences or a related field (i.e. Biology, Malacology, Zoology, Ecology, Botany, Natural Resource Management, Conservation, or Environmental Sciences). EXPERIENCE:  At least two (2) years of experience working in native Hawaiian ecosystems or similar ecosystem, conducting field research or biological monitoring. Experience working with Microsoft Office. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of Hawaiian ecosystems, native and invasive flora and fauna of the islands. Solid understanding of current conservation issues impacting the Hawaiian Islands, and how to conduct work in compliance with State and Federal laws. Communicate clearly and effectively. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to utilize the Microsoft Office suite. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months of hire).  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days.  Ability to backpack, lift and carry forty (40) pounds. Ability to conduct field work in remote locations and rugged terrain. Ability to hike for up to eight (8) miles in mountainous conditions with a forty (40) pound backpack. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience working with Hawaiian invertebrates. Knowledge of Hawai‘i’s invertebrate fauna, including ecology, biology, and existing threats to Hawaiian invertebrates.
