Program Director

Position Description

Kupu is a 501c3 nonprofit organization which empowers youth to serve their communities through character building, service learning, and environmental stewardship. Kupu trains and equips young adults in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific Rim with work skills, life skills, and knowledge to help them become successful as individuals and as part of the greater community.  Kupu is staffed by people with a heart to better Hawaii while working as a team with a purpose of doing what is pono and doing what is best for Hawaii and its people. Kupu is a team-focused, vibrant, and synergistic organization whose culture is dynamic and seeks to make a larger impact on Hawaii.

Position Duties

This position is a full-time position (includes full health benefits). Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Team Building
    • Models the core culture of the organization (character, humility, ‘ohana, service, excellence, and nobility)
    • Responsible for leading and encouraging managers assigned to this role and program teams
    • Create an engaging atmosphere the requires teamwork, authenticity, feedback, accountability, and produces results
    • Provides and requires clear and healthy communication within the division and organization
    • Supervision and mentorship that enables others to acts and communicates a shared organizational vision
    • Encourages the heart of others and reinforces the core culture of the organization daily
  • Program Management
    • Develop and initiate goals and strategic initiatives for programming in alignment with strategic direction of the organization
    • Analyze trends in the programs, policies impacting programs, identify issues/opportunities and developing and recommending solutions to the Chief Operating Officer
    • Ensure programs are evaluating performance, receive meaningful feedback, and are developing strategies to execute improvements
    • Build and maintain effective operational systems within Kupu’s policies and procedures
  • Program Development
    • Encourage an entrepreneurial spirit that innovates and also systematizes so programs are sustainable
    • Develop annual growth goals of program in this division
    • Develop and implement plan to increase program budget by being creative, applying for funding aligned with current year goals
    • Develop long-term strategy that reinforces sustainable, diverse, and resilient funding  
    • Support successful execution of fundraising events
    • Discover and develop new relationships and funding opportunities for department, programs, and organization
    • Manage external partnerships including community partnerships and government partnerships
    • Oversee division use of database (i.e. Salesforce)
    • Manage all contracts, negotiations, budgets, dashboards, and benchmarks for the program
  • Develop and manage budget
    • Staff development and training oversight
    • Oversight and compliance of grants and contracts pertinent to the programs in this division
  • Other miscellaneous duties

Position Requirements

The Program Director must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Available full-time Monday through Friday, as well as possible weekends and evenings
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field
  • At least seven to ten years of related experience
  • Have at least five years of management experience
  • Three years of contract management and budget management experience
  • Able to work in a dynamic environment that requires both high level strategic vision and partnerships yet is also organized and detailed oriented
  • Fund and contract development experience within similar levels needed for this program
