This position will assist the Nā Ala Hele Trails and Access Program staff in the maintenance of Program trails, as well as the research and monitoring of historic trails and accesses.

Description of Duties:

• Trail maintenance: Member will assist Nā Ala Hele Trails and Access Program staff in the maintenance of Program Trails to adhere to public access trail standards.

• GIS: Member will assist Nā Ala Hele Trails and Access Program staff in researching and mapping historic and ancient trails using GIS software.

• Outreach and volunteer assistance: Member will assist Nā Ala Hele Trails and Access Program staff in various outreach and volunteer events.

• Other: Member may assist other projects within the Division of Forestry and Wildlife with fieldwork.

Skills/Knowledge:

• Experience with basic hand tools (i.e., picks, handsaws, drills, wrenches, etc.).

• Basic knowledge of Hawaiian plants, animals, geology, culture, and history.

• Experience or willing to learn use of herbicide application.

• Basic experience hiking on trails in Hawai‘i.

• Ability to work well with others and also independently.

• Knowledge and experience using ArcGIS software. (Preferred)

• Able to engage with the public.

January 7, 2019 - November 22, 2019 (11 months, full time)

Applicant Requirements:

1. Age - Applicants must be at least 17 years of age by the start date of the service term (due to AmeriCorps regulations).

2. Diploma - Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

3. Citizenship - Applicants must be one of the following: a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien (due to AmeriCorps regulations).

4. Criminal History Check - Applicants are subject to a criminal history check.

5. Housing/Transportation - Applicants must have their own personal housing and transportation arrangements on-island.

Work Conditions:

Participants should expect to work in all non-hazardous weather conditions and natural environments including rain, wind, cold, hot, dry, sunny, shaded, or high-elevation. Field conditions include lava rock landscapes, forested areas, coastal areas, and other natural terrains. Interns can expect to utilize 4x4 trucks, ATV or other OHVs, and Helicopters for transport to work areas. Basic hand tools and power tools are used in fieldwork. Members should be able to hike 5 miles carrying 30 lbs.
