Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is recruiting a Director to manage all aspects of operations at Limahuli Garden and Preserve. This 1,000-acre property, located in the north shore community of Hā’ena, Kaua‘i, contains significant cultural and archaeological sites. The Preserve encompasses three ecological zones with natural populations of rare and endangered plant species and is the centerpiece of NTBG’s biocultural conservation and restoration ecology programs. A hallmark of this award-winning garden has been developing scientific collections of Hawaiian ethnobotanical and native plants in the context of a Hawaiian ahupua’a system. This position is based at Limahuli Garden but reports to the NTBG’s Director and CEO at the headquarters in Kalaheo, Kauai.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in Horticulture, Botany, Ethnobotany, or Botanical Garden Management and a minimum of five years practical experience in horticulture, ideally in management in a botanical garden setting. Knowledge of tropical plants, especially Hawaiian species, and restoration ecology practices, is an asset. Experience working with Hawaiian cultural practitioners and a familiarity with the Hawaiian language is preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills, managerial experience, computer competence, and successful grant writing are required. Must be able to collaboratively work with a multicultural staff and community, cultural experts, and a multidisciplinary team of scientists, educators, and conservationists.
