EDUCATION/OUTREACH PROGRAM ASSOCIATE – ID# 220214. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC), located on Maui, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,497-$4,548/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Works with Maui County teachers and students to facilitate distribution, use, and integration of the Hoike o Haleakala environmental education curriculum in local classrooms. Provides classroom instruction, assists teachers in obtaining relevant resources, coordinates teacher training workshops, solicits feedback on curriculum materials, and revises materials as appropriate.  Coordinates logistics for the Maui Mauka Conservation Awareness Training (MMCAT) program. Schedules and coordinates MMCAT trainings, arranges speakers, designs promotional materials, and publicizes training. Maintains and updates MMCAT website, builds relationships with tour operators and other possible audiences. Explores opportunities for expanding and fine-tuning the program, including webinars, online materials, field trips and additional partnerships. Ensures that the quality of programs is in alignment with similar efforts statewide. Tracks program budget and procures necessary supplies. Assists with other aspects of the MISC outreach program, including representing MISC at public venues/community presentations and developing outreach materials related to invasive species. Drives project vehicles to field sites and presentation/public venues. May occasionally lead volunteer groups in short-term directed field assignments. Maintains and compiles records for reporting and program quality assessment.  Duty hours may vary to include late evening shifts and occasional work on weekends. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience in a natural resource related field, and experience in public relations or education/teaching related to natural resource management in Hawai‘i.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of basic biological principles and ecosystem dynamics. Knowledge of field techniques used to identify, detect and control invasive species. Familiarity with common native and introduced Hawaiian plants and animal species. Demonstrated ability to orally communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of audiences. Public speaking ability. Ability to present information to individuals or groups. Ability to design, develop and deliver training programs and educational materials. Clear and concise writing skills. Proficient in the use of basic computer programs including word processing and desktop publishing. Good organizational skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to hike on uneven terrain in remote areas. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science or related field.  Experience with control of invasive species in Hawai‘i.  Strong graphic design and product development skills.
