Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Temporary, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Mauna Kea Watershed Alliance (MKWA), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $15/hr.

DUTIES: Participates in a variety of activities associated with the Mauna Kea Watershed Alliance (MKWA) on MKWA partnership lands. Constructs, monitors and maintains fence line. Conducts restoration of montane/mesic forest, including seed collection and processing, propagation, out-planting, and monitoring of native species at restoration areas. As needed may support regular hire staff with monitoring and controlling feral ungulates and alien plants/grasses. Collects and analyzes technical field data, and assists with report writing. Assists field leaders to conduct resource management work.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of field experience working in natural resource management or closely related field in Hawai‘i (at least one (1) year of college level coursework from an accredited college or university in a related discipline (i.e., Biology, Zoology, or related Natural Science) may substitute for experience).

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Ability to construct, maintain, and repair ungulate exclusion fences. Working knowledge of fence installation. Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna, and threats from alien species, especially for Mauna Kea ecosystems. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology, wildlife biology, and restoration. Ability to use compass, map, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) hand-held units to navigate remote areas. Ability to take detailed field notes and input field data into a computer. Ability to safely apply herbicides. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s
insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual and automatic transmission including ATV/UTV. May be required to provide a clean driver’s abstract as deemed necessary by the job requirements and/or the project.

Post Offer/Employment Condition: If these trainings are available during the work period they may be offered to temporary employees based on project needs and availability: American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR. Wilderness First Aid. Basic helicopter safety course (A100) online. Hazard Communication training online. Chainsaw training. Other related training.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work at 5,000-8,000 feet. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to four (4) consecutive days. Able to backpack, lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Must be willing to camp for up to four days at a time.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in identification of native Hawaiian and non-native plants. Experience in using radio-telemetry, GPS, and Global Information Systems (GIS). Knowledge of Mauna Kea ecology and landscapes.
