PCSU OAHU NR/ER FIELD ASSISTANT – ID# 221207.  

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Oahu Natural Resources/Ecosystem Restoration (NR/ER) Protection and Management, located in Pearl City, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,490/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Serves as a field crew member building and maintaining fence lines, controlling non-native animal populations, locating and controlling alien plant invasions using mechanical and chemical means, and monitoring native vegetation and ecosystem recovery. Work focuses on the protection of the native Hawaiian forest and related water resources on DOFAW lands on Oahu. Fieldwork requires working with firearms, herbicides, small power tools (i.e., chainsaws, weed whackers, etc.), and working in and around helicopters. Records detailed field data and spatial information and inputs data into global positioning system (GPS) and computer systems. Maintains field equipment, tracks supply inventories, and assists with public relations activities. Loads, unloads, aims, and shoots handguns, shotguns, rifles and other RCUH-authorized firearms from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs.  

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of experience in field activities related to Natural Resource Management.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Ability to operate power tools including chainsaws, weed eaters, generators, chipper, etc. Ability to communicate orally and in writing and to comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Ability to use a compass and other navigation tools and to read and navigate with topographic maps and aerial photos. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate prior to use of firearms on the job (whichever comes first) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass State and Federal criminal history/record background check at initial hire, at change of job requiring use of firearms and annually, which legally enables possession and use of firearms and ammunition throughout duration of employment. Must obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service firearms training (or other comparable training) and State of Hawai‘i/DLNR Hunter Education Training Program firearms certification. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by State and Federal laws. Failure to pass the firearms qualification requirements may be grounds for disqualification of part or all of the job duties.  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete a chainsaw safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days, two to four (2-4) times a month. Ability to backpack and lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Field work experience with emphasis on feral animal and alien plant control with a land management agency. College courses or degree in Natural Sciences or related field.
