Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Waianae Mountains Watershed Partnership (WMWP), located in Makakilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $3,887 - $4,204/Mon 

DUTIES:  Serves as a Field Crew Leader for the WMWP, overseeing and directing field crew members involved in natural resource management projects to implement the WMWP Management Plan, and address landscape-level watershed threats.  Supports all aspects of the implementation of WMWP Management and Action Plans.  The majority of work deals with leading invasive plant and animal control efforts, feral ungulate proof fence construction and maintenance, and ecosystem restoration in remote upper elevation sites in the Wai‘anae Mountains. Conducts scheduling, logistics, planning, and implementation as directed by WMWP Operations Supervisor. Spearheads efforts with WMWP staff, Restoration Management Technician (a.k.a. Specialist) and Operations Supervisor to coordinate and plan field and other watershed conservation activities, such as native ecosystem and watershed monitoring, feral animal control, fence line building and maintenance, and mechanical and chemical alien plant control. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Natural Resources Management. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of related natural/conservation work in Hawai‘i or similar environment may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.).  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of terrestrial field work experience working with biological resources, conservation planning, or natural resource management in Hawai‘i or similar environment. Experience and expertise in ecosystem protection/ungulate proof fence construction and maintenance. At least one (1) year experience of leading staff/interns, volunteers, or attendance in supervisory training programs.  Experience needs to be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, non-profit organization in the appropriate field and can include internships and accredited volunteer work.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of basic supervisory principles and techniques for maintaining team cohesion, motivating field crew, and providing constructive feedback to others. Working knowledge of herbicide use and weed control techniques. Working knowledge of ungulate monitoring and control techniques. Working knowledge of proper and safe use and maintenance of firearms. Strong working knowledge of and/or expertise in vegetation, and/or rare plant, and/or stream monitoring techniques and data collection. Must possess strong knowledge of Hawaiian flora and fauna. Ability to assume a leadership role for overseeing and training field staff. Ability to set and meet goals related to projects assigned.  Ability to identify common and rare native Hawaiian plants and differentiate from invasive alien plants. Ability to track and monitor ungulate activity. Ability to read and navigate with topographic maps, state Tax Map Keys (TMKs), and aerial photographs. Ability to use GPS unit, altimeter, compass, and maps. Ability to safely operate power tools including chainsaws, pole saws, augers, rock drills, weed eaters, generators, and chippers. Ability to use standard GIS program for data entry, analysis, and map preparation. Ability to use word-processing and spreadsheet programs.  Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions and respond appropriately to shifting operational plans. Exhibits good leadership and communication skills, have excellent interpersonal skills, and be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate prior to use of firearms on the job (whichever comes first) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to four (4) consecutive days.  Able to backpack and lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Knowledge of island ecosystem processes and incipient alien plant and animal invasions.  Experience conducting biological surveys and weed control efforts within the Waianae Mountains.  Previous experience monitoring and mapping vegetation and stream resources in the Waianae Mountains or similar environments.  Expertise with database (MS Access) and GIS (Arcview) and GPS (Garmin) systems.  Previous work experience working with interns and volunteers on large scale volunteer service projects. Work experience related to restoration work (nursery, propagation, seed collection, outplanting).
