Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Native Ecosystem Protection and Management Rare Plant Program, with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Kauai Branch, on the Island of Kauai.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,550/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Works in the propagation program for rare and endangered plants for out-planting in native ecosystems on the Island of Kauai. Assists in all aspects of propagation and cultivation of plants, oversees assistants and volunteers, writes reports, and assists with monitoring out-planted stock as needed. Works in greenhouse operations and field site development in collaboration with Kauai DOFAW. Orders and maintains supplies needed for the propagation facility.  Prepares for and assists with out-planting for nursery plants into field plots (adjacent or near existing greenhouse). 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Horticulture, Botany, Agriculture, or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of experience in landscape, nursery, or greenhouse management may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.)

EXPERIENCE

At least two (2) years of work experience in plant propagation techniques in landscaping, nursery, greenhouse management industry, or related field.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of principles of plant propagation, irrigation design and construction, pest identification and control (integrated pest management), safe application of pesticides and their regulation, and fertilizer application. Knowledge of classification of native Hawaiian plants, botanical nomenclature, and terminology.  Good working knowledge of computers, word-processing and databases. Must have thorough knowledge of greenhouse and horticultural procedures and methods. Knowledge and understanding of basic plumbing and irrigation tools, methods and hardware.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to properly use all applicable Personal Protective Equipment associated with job duties (e.g., safe application of pesticides). Ability to enter data in online database. Ability to us hand tools and other gardening equipment, including utilizing applicable horticultural methods. Strong organizational and record-keeping skills. Ability to prepare and write reports. Ability to report field and laboratory results. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months of hire.  Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Physically able and willing to carry out organized field work under rigorous physical conditions. Ability to work in warm indoor environments for extended periods of time. Considerable amounts of bending, stooping, crouching, standing for long periods, and hiking in cold, wet, rough, and uneven terrain. Ability to lift loads up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted is required.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Horticulture, Botany, Agriculture, or related field. Knowledge of plant species and ecosystems occurring on Kauai. Experience in propagation and cultivation of rare Hawaiian plant species.  Familiar with mobile electronic data collection methods (e.g., smart phones, tablets etc.).
