Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), located in Seattle, Washington.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372.00/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Tests, assists with analyses, and arranges for repairs of Deep Argo floats in the laboratory, including use of Structure Query Language (SQL) databases and Network Common Data Format (NetCDF) files. Plans floats shipping and deployments. Loads floats onto ships and performs on-board float testing. Goes to sea and deploys floats and also trains float deployers. Ensures Argo Program compliant submission of float data onto national and international data streams as well as into local SQL databases and NetCDF data files. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Oceanography, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Ocean Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (1) year experience with oceanographic instrumentation and software. Up to one (1) year of experience with databases and data analysis. Up to one (1) year experience with computer programming.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Working knowledge of computerized data synthesis and analysis, including use of MatLab or an equivalent programming language. Basic familiarity with use of scientific equipment in a laboratory setting. Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location.  Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Must be able to obtain the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) certification for hazardous goods transport due to the floats’ lithium batteries.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment to facilitate loading floats on ships in various ports and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to meet US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pound instruments around the lab and at sea unassisted. Ability to lift and carry up to two hundred (200) pound crates assisted. Must be able to travel, which can exceed six (6) weeks per year. Must be able to work at sea for prolonged periods, which can exceed six (6) weeks per year.  Sufficient experience at sea to know that seasickness will not be an impediment to working at sea.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain throughout duration of employment. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Working knowledge of data structures such as NetCDF or SQL (PostgresSQL and MySQL). Working knowledge of web programming languages (SQL). Education in physical oceanography. Master’s Degree or PhD from an accredited college or university in Oceanography, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Ocean Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple endeavors simultaneously.  One to three (1-3) years of experience which included, experience with oceanographic instrumentation and software, databases and data analysis, and with computer programing.
