Job purpose

Malama Maunalua offers a growth opportunity for individuals with solid prior work experience and a commitment to a career in conservation. Mālama Maunalua (MM,) a small but effective marine conservation organization with an 11-year track record, is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to lead the restoration of Maunalua Bay. This position offers great opportunities for candidates with some management, community and fundraising experience who are looking to grow their organization-building skills and enjoy working with a large base of approximately 2500 volunteers a year.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Mālama Maunalua’s staff, programs, growth, and execution of its mission. Qualified candidates will have proven experience in some, if not all, of the following: working with community; developing funding streams from individuals, businesses and foundations; proven skills at managing organizations and staff. S/he will have deep commitment to marine conservation and community participation, and have the skills and ability to quickly develop knowledge of MM’s core programs, operations, and business plans.

Duties and responsibilities

The ED will be expected to lead MM in the following areas:

Vision and Planning

 Work directly with the Board to define strategic goals. Translate those goals into a succinct and clear vision that defines MM’s role in healing Maunalua Bay and the major steps to achieve restoration of the Bay.

 Develop a clear Annual Action Plan to achieve the strategic goals.

 Communicate this vision persuasively to internal and external stakeholders to build their understanding and support for the vision and the plan.

External (Community) Leadership

 Be the effective “face of MM” that communicates the need for restoration and program results and successes and promotes the plans and projects of the organization.

 Work with the board to grow the base of individual and business donors and nurture MM’s existing donors to build a stable funding stream.

 Implement effective community communications (e.g. social and traditional media, etc.) to showcase Maunalua Bay, its plight and the organization’s accomplishments.

 Build effective collaborations/partnerships with key conservation and community organizations and leaders that will lead to positive changes in Maunalua Bay and support MM’s mission.

Fund Development Leadership

 Expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing and planned programs and projects. Develop funding streams with new individual and corporate donors. Use external presence and relationships to identify and pursue new opportunities for funding.

 Nurture existing funders.

 Identify, pursue/write and manage a wide combination of agency and foundation grants.

Program Leadership

 Ensure that the Annual Action Plan is effectively implemented: define and communicate clear, challenging yet achievable project/program objectives and measures. Lead, guide and oversee staff, contractors and volunteers to achieve the goals.

 Lead, coach and develop a small, high performing team. Track, measure and evaluate project, program, staff and/or contractor performance and effectively communicate progress and/or issues to the board, funders and other stakeholders, as appropriate.

 Work collaboratively with and communicate effectively with the Board of Directors to achieve the strategic plan and agreed-upon goals for MM. Provide Board the information it needs to monitor organization performance, quality and progress and to make good decisions.

 Achieve and maintain effective infrastructure to achieve projects, including office, networks, tools and equipment, web site, social media presence, grant and donor tracking etc.

 Work with the board to develop appropriate financial goals and achieve them and allocate resources consistent with financial resources. Set realistic budgets, prepare and manage to quality cash flow projections and oversee timely and quality compliance with grant requirements.

Qualifications

 Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business, conservation or related field required; advanced degree a plus.

 At least 5 years’ progressive professional experience.

 Strong leadership skills, with an entrepreneurial spirit and strong business and management skills; demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, donors, and potential partners a must.

 Ability to raise funds through work with individual donors, businesses, foundations and government agencies.

 Outstanding interpersonal skills, judgment, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate and build coalitions with a wide range of individuals and organizations.

 Demonstrated experience overseeing projects through to success, including meeting financial goals, project deadlines, and coordinating the work of key staff and partners.

 Excellent and persuasive communication skills, both written and verbal, including some public speaking experience, and the ability to effectively represent Mālama Maunalua to the Maunalua community, MM’s partners, state and federal elected officials, donors, as well as in traditional and social media.

 A strong commitment to the mission, values, and programs of Mālama Maunalua. The following experience will be considered a strong plus in evaluating candidates:

 Demonstrated success in fundraising.

 Proven success in community outreach and engagement.

 Knowledge and appreciation of, as well as connection to Hawaii and Maunalua Bay and its environment, conservation and political history, and the role of science in developing conservation strategies.

Working conditions

The work is primarily performed during normal business hours. However, volunteer events often take place on weekends and community meetings occur in the evenings so some evening and weekend work will be necessary.
