Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

We are excited to announce that Beginner Bird School is open for applications! This is a beginner to intermediate level training course that will begin in Hilo and take place at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. Attendees will work alongside trained mentors to learn how to identify Hawaiʻi Island forest birds by sight and sound. This is a multi-day, overnight training from Friday, December 8th until Sunday, December 10th. This training is open to all individuals, but we are limited to 20 available slots.

If selected, the registration fee is $200.00. All meals, transportation, and lodging during the event are included. Membership to TWS Hawaii is also included.

Discuss with your employer if this qualifies as job training. Kupu AmeriCorps and Kupu ʻĀina Corps Service Members and their host sites are eligible to apply for reimbursement. Please discuss with your Kupu host site or island coordinator.

Applications close on Wednesday, November 8th. Announcements for selection will be emailed out on Monday, November 13th.

We hope to continue offering this event quarterly. Any applicants not selected for this round will be first in line for future classes in the Spring, Summer, and Autumn 2024.
